    Fall 2008: Smashbox Wicked Lovely...

New for fall from Smashbox is the Wicked Lovely collection, as we have seen with other Fall 2008 collections the emphasis is on smokey plums and grays which suits me just fine!

    Medianl

I am all over the Cream Liner/Loose Shimmer combo "Three sultry cream liners and a sparkling loose shimmer in one mirrored pot! The liners provide totally customizable eye definition that doesn’t flake, run or tug. This mistake-proof formula is a great tool for the perfect smoky eye, and is ultra-blendable to create a range of eye looks! The loose shimmer provides the finishing touch for wickedly lovely eyes."  Sounds FAB to me!!  Also in this collection are three limited edition glosses (with leather tassels no  less....LOL), a double ended lip pencil, blush and two shadow duos.

I would have liked to see more lippies but that's the way it goes sometimes...sigh.

Get This: L'Oreal Infallible 6 Hour Lipgloss...

300 I know I am a lipgloss junkie, I can't help it...but that is beside the point!  I saw this little beauty in CVS yesterday and grabbed a few shades to test out.  Why should you bother with another gloss you say?  Well for one, this one is affordable so you can buy more than one shade, it stays put for 4-6 hours (no joke) and it is scented but flavorless.  L'Oreal Infallible 6 Hour Lipgloss is a true one-step long-lasting lip gloss that feels comfortable, not sticky or tacky.  I loved Dulce de Leche, Truffle and Sangria.

Now for the pros...it comes in 16 shades, it is not sticky or tacky, it is moisturizing without being too "glossy", it has a little keyhole type applicator that is very nice feeling on the lips as opposed to the standard "doe foot" applicator that seems to absorb so much product. The only thing missing here really is SPF but I will forgive them because I use a lip balm that has SPF built in.

Now this is not a "no-transfer" gloss, BUT it will last through a meal. You will still end up with gloss on your glass but for the money definite thumbs up.

Priced at $9.99 at Drugstore.com and all drugstores nationwide.

Ode to the new matte...not chalky or pasty looking like the mattes of the 90's.  Clinique's Fall 2008 Modern Matte collection includes Colour Surge Eye Shadow Stay Matte.  These shadows have a softer finish and have intense, buildable, easy to blend shades.  The shadows work on women of all ages because it defies creasing....Gotta love that right??

TMG Interview: Dermatologist Dr. Lisa Donofrio ...

Dr. Lisa Donofrio is a vision.  Gorgeous, tall, blonde and very unassuming.  Not quite what I expected when they said I was meeting with a dermatologist.  When I walked into her suite she was sitting down banging out emails - not your typical dermatologist right??  She is a graduate of Tulane University, she has her own private practices at the Saven Center for Dermatology and Cosmetic Surgery in both New Haven and Branford Connecticut and the Laser and Skin Surgery Center in Manhattan.  She is an associate clinical professor of dermatology at Yale University...the list goes on and on (for Lisa's bio click here).  So I found it surprising that someone that would be THAT busy and with those credentials had time to talk to anyone let alone a room full of bloggers.  But she did and you know what...she WANTED to.  She even whipped out charts and images on her laptop (gotta love visual aides!!)

    200275402001

I got a chance to chat with Lisa for about 40 minutes about everything from Restylane to Botox...here is what she had to say..

Lianne:  How does a patient decide what the best course of treatment is?

Dr. Donofrio:  It depends on whether they are new or not.  I always ask a patient, what is it about your face/body bothers you?  Then I try to guide them from there...about 50% of the women that walk into my office just say something like, "I don't know what I want, I just don't like the way I look"  So I then try to ask them if there are certain times that they don't like the way they look.  For instance when they are angry, tired or sad and then I plan a course of treatment from there.

Lianne:  That is both interesting and disturbing!  I can't imagine walking into someplace and just saying fix me..I don't know how but fix me!! Have you seen a rise in the use of injectibles over the past 2 years?

Dr. Donofrio:  Definitely...without a doubt.  5 years ago all we had collagen and fat transfer.  The new injectable products have really made it much easier for women to get the look they want with little or no down time.  With collagen there was always some bruising and fat transfers had to occur after the patient already had another procedure like liposuction.

Lianne:  There have been so many “bad” or “injectible nightmares” that have popped up over the years.  How does one go about choosing a doctor that will have their best interests in mind and not have their eyes on making $$ instead a la reality show?

Dr. Donofrio:  I would take a look at their credentials and ask to see their work, if they don't have either or their work looks crazy keep looking.

Lianne:  How long do injectibles last and which kind of right for what type of wrinkle?

Dr. Donofrio: Restylane and Perlane has been FDA approved in the United States for nasal labial folds BUT can be used “off label” all over the body (has been done in clinical trials) Restylane/Perlane stimulates collagen so the filler lasts longer.  Restylane is for wrinkles that aren't that deep yet and Perlane is for the deeper wrinkles/folds.  Perlane is also used "off label" to build volume say in the lips, cheekbones or chin.

Lianne:  Have you seen any complications at the injection site? If so what were they and how long did they last?

Dr. Donofrio: Occasionally there is some irritation but not often.  I recommend that my patients take  glucosamine as it has been proven to prevent the break hyaluronic acid in the joints so it can't hurt!

Lianne:  Good to know!!  Is there anything that a patient should do prior to seeing a doctor for the treatment?  Anything they should avoid??

Dr. Donofrio:  Like any surgery, avoid taking anything that thins the blood like aspirin or ibuprofen.

Lianne: How long do Restylane/Perlane treatments last and what (if anything) is left behind when the injection wears off?

Dr. Donofrio:  They can last 6-9 months or longer.  Since the main ingredient in those injectibles, hyaluronic acid is naturally found in the body, it will be absorbed so nothing is left behind.

Lianne:  What kind of results have you seen in Ethnic skin?

Dr. Donofrio:  That is a great question!  Clinical trials have been run on all kinds/types of ethnic skin and I an happy to say there is no difference.  There was no increase in hyper-pigmentation or keloid formation whatsoever.

Lianne:  Are there certain skin types that fare better with injectibles?

Dr. Donofrio:  Whenever you inject a clear substance, certain skin types can appear blue-ish.  I wouldn't recommend Restylane or Perlane for thin skinned individuals that have aged.  In those instances, I would try collagen instead.

Lianne:  Are there certain people that you would not recommend Restylane or Perlane for?

Dr. Donofrio:  Anyone that has had a history of chronic strep infections, bacterial infections or scarlet fever should not use Restylane or Perlane.

Lianne:  I have heard that injectibles only last for a certain period of time is that true and if so does that time period differ from product to product?

Dr. Donofrio:  They do wear off eventually, but that varies by both individual and product.

Lianne:  How often do you have to “maintain” the injections?

Dr. Donofrio:  Every 6-8 months but again, that varies by product.

Lianne: With Botox I have heard the muscles relax over time making it less likely that you have to inject that often, is the same true for Restylane and Perlane?

Dr. Donofrio:  Yes, Restylane and Perlane have been shown to increase collagen production in the skin, making your follow up injections to be less than the original one.  As far as Botox goes, the muscles don't actually relax.  in a nutshell, Botox helps to train your facial muscles from unconscious habitual movements so the less you move your face and make those wrinkles, the less apparent they will be.  If you are a chronic brow furrower, Botox will help you do that less therefore making the wrinkles less apparrent.

I want to thank Dr. Donofrio for taking the time to speak with me and I hope TMG readers have gotten a little more information from my little trip!

Barely There: Veet In Shower Hair Removal Cream...

Veetshower_2 Okay so I know that a lot of you have hair issues (who doesn't?) but me...I am one of the lucky ones.  I have to be honest, I am pretty hairless minus the old bikini line and I am so not good about waxing like I used to be.  Now with all of these reports coming out about bacteria hanging out on razor blades I am starting to re-think how often I use them.  So I was excited when Veet started making products that weren't so god awful smelling!  I like the idea of going in the shower with a less than perfect bikini line and coming out smooth.

I decided to check out Veet In Shower Hair Removal Cream and it is truly like gold to me.  I used it before I went to Atlanta and I am telling you, not one razor bump or irritated area just smooth skin and in under 3 minutes!  They have several versions, one with a razorless blade (perfect for legs) and the thicker formulas for coarser hair like your bikini line or underarms (although the box said you can use it on bikini line, underarms AND legs so go for it!)

The cream itself is really thick and stays put, it is designed to work in the shower so from the second you put it on it starts to work the magic. Wash your hair while it does it's thing!  Do not leave this on for more than 6 minutes though (I didn't try that but the box said so...I listened!) it comes with this little loofah sponge that really helps to get all the hair off and I you know what...smooth almost like waxing I kid you not.

At $6.99 - it is cheaper than a Brazilian honey...and waaaay less invasive!

TMG Interview: Non-Invasive Plastic Surgery & Aging Part I...

As you know, I was lucky enough to go up to New York last week and participate in a session where I got to delve into the world of non-invasive plastic surgery procedures.  Which aren't really plastic surgery procedures at all since they are typically done in a dermatologist's office.  That day we covered what are known as "injectibles".  These new breed of non-invasive procedures are typically painless, with little or no down time (one woman told me she went shopping immediately afterwards!  Quelle surprise mon amis!!) and are done on an outpatient basis.

    73563027

Let me start by telling you how it all went down... I was met in the lobby of the Bryant Park hotel and ushered upstairs to a suite where they had yummy sandwiches, salads and PINKBERRY!!! Be still my heart.  There, I met two women Mirav Bradshaw and Vicki Hodge who had both had the injectibles Restylane and Perlane done.  They told me they started with Restylane and then the doctor recommended that they up the ante on their next treatment with Perlane instead.  We talked for a while and I was able to ask them a few questions regrading their experience with the procedure.  They both looked great (see before and afters  here and here) and they told me that they had no allergic reaction, minimal swelling, they were out and about almost immediately afterwards and that since the needle was so small it felt like a tiny pinch.

Restylane and Perlane are for what they call "nasolabial folds" (in english, the smile lines that run from the bottom of your nose to the corners of your mouth).  The main ingredient in both is hyaluronic acid, which occurs naturally in the body and therefore also dissolves naturally with time.  The main difference between the two is the volume and size of the product itself.  Restylane is meant to be injected mid to deep layer of the skin (small wrinkles) and Perlane is meant to be injected deep into the skin (deeper wrinkles/folds).

The injections last about six to nine months (that varies from person to person) and they have also found that the injections help with the production of collagen so over time you will need less and less.  One of the doctors that I spoke to in the suite actually said that he also uses the product "off label" (meaning that it is only FDA approved for the nasolabial folds BUT MOST doctors use it in other areas as well) to "Create volume in the cheekbones lips or chin alleviating the need for costly implants or collagen".

There is also a way to reverse the injections if the result is not what a patient wants, they can inject a solution mixed with saline to immediately reverse the injections.  Both doctors I spoke to said thay would then perform the injection again at no cost.

Restylane and Perlane are available through dermatologists and med-spas for more information please visit the website.  Next up, I have an interview with Dr. Lisa Donofrio who is a a board certified dermatologist with a private practice in Connecticut on deck as well so stay tuned!

Get This: Sephora Brand Dry Oil...

As you know, I was on a little mini-vacation last week in HOTlanta.  We had so much fun but I was definitely mad as hell when my travel size body lotion leaked all over the inside of my case!  Off to Sephora I went...and I discovered this little gem Sephora Dry Oil.

    P196800_hero

They come in a 5oz size (too big for travel but I packed it in my suitcase and prayed), and they have all these yummy scents!  The best thing about it...my skin drank it in like water, no greasy feel and the scent was nice but not overpowering enough to compete with my fragrance.  I picked up Coconut Cream and Asian Ginger but they have 13 to choose from.
