Today, Zoya Nail Polish is available at the finest salons and spa's worldwide and frequently receives top ratings in fashion, health, and pregnancy magazines world wide. When asked why they chose Zoya Nail Polish, most people say " Incredible Color Selection" and "...amazing wear ...nothing compares on manicures and pedicures..."

Go Red: Take The Quiz For Heart Health...

Go_red_for_women Ladies, I cannot tell you how important (more important than outward beauty...) it is for you to keep your body healthy.  You have heard me speak over the last month about being heart healthy, because heart disease is one of the top killers of women.  So eat heart healthy foods and exercise so you can be pretty inside too!!

If you are not sure whether you are at risk take this quiz and find out for certain.  No matter how old you are or what nationality, this disease does not discriminate!  So take 5 minutes and check it out...that way you can get the facts you need and partner with your doctor to make smart decisions about your health. You will be glad you did.

    Tag I'm It!!

Carla from Product Girl has tagged me so now it's my turn to give my answers for the meme!

1.What is the story behind the name of your blog?
My makeup artistry business is called TheMakeupGirl, I just decided to stick with the name.  Originally I wanted just MakeupGirl but the url was taken so TheMakeupGirl was born

    2. Why did you start blogging?
Originally, I started as a creative outlet and as a way to talk about all of the products I use (which is a lot...LOL)  Blogging was a way for me to connect to people that liked some of the same things I did.  I figured i couldn't be the only beauty product junkie out there and boy was I right!!

    3. What is your best and worst blogging experience?
The best thing by far was getting to attend New York Fashion week - that was just IT for me.  But I have also met some people that I can honestly be lifelong friends and that if truly priceless.  I haven't had a worst experience yet and I hope to keep it that way...LMAO!

    4. What do I think will happen to the blog in 2008?
I am lucky enough to have turned this into a second (or 3rd or 4th depending on who you ask...lol) job.  I have just taken on a feature writer and a lot of things are happening right now.  I hope to grow, expand and eventually turn this into my only job.  There are so many avenues to explore with this new media platform so this is just so exciting to me I feel like the sky is the limit!

Now it's my turn to tag more bloggers:

    Daneen from Spoiled Pretty
    Kristen from Beauty Addict
    Christine from Temptalia

Dinner at Koi With Aveda and Total Beauty...

Well if I didn't mention it before...it was raining like crazy on Friday in New York oh and um...my plane was struck by lightening mid-air - NICE.  So I don't mean drizzle, it was coming down fairly steady all day long and into the night.  So after running around in that mess all day, it was nice to kick back and relax at a restaurant.

The dinner was sponsored by Total Beauty and Aveda and honey we had a BLAST.  The restaurant was located inside my hotel and it was called Koi (apparently there is one in West Hollywood too).  The food was so yummy (they kept bringing Sake!!  Awww Hellll Nawww!)  There was an endless parade of celebrities all evening and we had the cat bird seat!  Thanks to my beauty sister Erika from MakeupBag for some of these photos...

    Go Red Baby...

200408269001 I TiVo everything and I do mean everything ladies.  I am always learning something from my TiVo adventures whether it's style tips, makeup finds or recipes (y'all know I can burn...right??)  I learned a new thing while watching my fave celeb chef Rachael Ray (even though you call yourself a cook Rachael...you are a chef in my eyes...) she is the queen of the one pot meal isn't she??  anyway, I digress.....LOL

On her show the other day she had a little thing where she was talking about women and heart disease and how it is the number one killer of women...NUMBER ONE????  So on Friday, February 1, 2008, by wearing red in support of women’s heart health, you will be showing your support to the little red dress campaign. The Red Dress—the national symbol for women and heart disease awareness—was designed to build awareness that women are at risk for heart disease, and motivate them to take action to reduce their risk.  Follow The Heart Truth and learn about heart disease in women this February, and throughout the year, through a series of exciting events taking place across the nation!

    Beauty & The Blog...

Tiawilliams Today the New York Times published an article with the lovely Tia Williams in her "Beauty Room" (First of all, how great is that??) but instead of being an empowering article embracing this new form of media.  It became essentially an attack piece on Beauty Blogs as a whole. Kayleen Schaefer's acid laced piece was nothing short of bait and switch kamikaze journalism.  It was my understanding that the bloggers were being interviewed to cast light on how the new form of media is essentially replacing some traditional media outlets, instead...Schaefer comes off sounding like she is a jealous school girl who didn't get her cut.

You can read the entire piece (link below) and judge for yourself. One of the main things that bugged me so much  is the assumption that a beauty blogger only writes for swag and notoriety.  I will admit, the "swag" (if you call a $50 jar of cream swag then so be it) is nice...but I have never been given a designer anything or flown anywhere on a PR company's dime EVER.  Not to say that it couldn't happen, but it just is not happening right now (seriously...it is SO NOT).  And I feel like it was unfair to lump everyone into that pile and just assume that we all get it and in exchange for free products you are guaranteed a positive glowing review.  I have written about hundreds of products that I am not crazy about.  I just like writing about the ones that I love more.

I work really hard on this blog, it is like a third job for me (seriously - I spend nearly 20-25 hours a week on this site AND I have a job by day as a Project Coordinator AND my makeup artistry business that I operate on the weekends and evenings, plus i am a single mom).  I pay for my hosting, my domain name and other things like travel, business cards etc. out of my own pocket.  I honestly do this because I am happy to provide my readers with help and advice.  So you tell me...am I doing this for the swag (First of all what swag....I still buy products!!  I am a beauty consumer just like you.) So I think not.

Seriously, All editors of any publication are plied with certain gifts, and a blogger is no exception...that's just the way it is.  I will say this though, it is amazing that today of all days, the pre-cursor to fashion week...this supposedly defamatory article comes out.  Well guess what...beauty bloggers got more press than ever before in one day...so it backfired - take THAT Kayleen Schaefer.  I will let you, my readers be the judge and please let me know what you think about this whole thing.  Here are a few articles for your perusal, leave me a comment with your feelings on the subject good or bad.

Favorite Things 2007: Auld Lang Syne...

Favorite_things_2007_banner_2 I can't believe 2007 has come to a close!!  This has been an incredible year and having all of you along for the ride has been great!  There were a lot of highlights this year, I have been to my first fashion week, gotten a little press and I have finally slayed the wrinkle beast across my forehead (hopefully...lol).  Not bad huh??

Annie of Blogdorf Goodman organizes this yearly list of favorite things, and I am all too happy to participate. There were several products that I fell in love with this year (isn't that always the case??)  but I must say, it was hard to pare everything down to 20 items!!  Here are my top 20 in no particular order.

Winter Beauty Tips From Nadine Haobsh aka Jolie in NYC...

Cover_image I just finished reading Nadine Haobsh's (aka Jolie in NYC) hilarious and useful book Beauty Confidential.  This book is actually a guide I can honestly say you will use.

This is a guide with nothing phoney, totally hassle free advice you can actually use.  With tips like,  "How to create the perfect (not too Tara Reid) smokey eye.." and "On your lips not your glass.."  Nadine does not disappoint with the witty humor, real life scenarios and includes a handy product price guide at the end of each chapter.  Not only that, but she includes products that can be found in drugstores as well as high end department stores.  This book is a steal as it will be your "go to" beauty bible for many years to come.

Nadine was kind enough to write a blog for TheMakeupGirl today on winter beauty tips.  So enjoy and..

    Winter Beauty Tips

    By Nadine Haobsh

    Author of Beauty Confidential

If you're like me, every year as the weather turns nippy, you go like clockwork through the same routine: throw the tank tops in a drawer to get all musty until spring, pull out the winter sweaters you bought last October and which now all have holes in the armpits, and dig out from the back of the hall closet coats which now seem depressingly out-of-date.  (Holidays around the corner?  Coat shopping time!  Nevermind you already have five in storage.)  Changing your skincare routine is similarly necessary; harsh elements like cold, wind and snow are going to wreck havoc on even the sturdiest complexions, and will age you more than you realize.  Here are a few simple tips to make sure your peaches-and-cream cheeks (hey, a girl can dream, can't she?) stay that way until April.

    - Just because it's winter and there's less sun in the sky doesn't mean you can forgo the sunscreen!  Use a product with at least SPF15 everyday.

    - Make sure your day or night cream has antioxidants in it; this will help protect your skin against damage from the wind and cold.  One of my favorite sunscreen/antioxidant combos is Neutrogena Anti-Oxidant Age Reverse Day Lotion SPF20

    - If your skin is particularly dry, switch to an emollient cleanser, such as Cetaphil, or an oil-based cleanser, such as Shu Uemura High Performance Balancing Cleansing Oil (The Shu cleansing oil is, paradoxically, great for acne-prone skin, as it won't strip skin of moisture, which can cause oil glands to go into overdrive and get clogged.)

    - Consider a heavier cream or serum for night, to keep skin extra hydrated while you sleep.  I like Olay Regenerist Deep Hydration Regenerating Cream

    - I know it's cold in your bathroom, especially when you wake up, but don't shower in boiling hot water; this will strip your skin of moisture!  The same holds for washing your face; wash in lukewarm water, and then gently pat dry.

    - Buy a great lip balm!  I love Kiehl's Lip Balm SPF 15 (which also comes in tinted shades), since it's the right balance of moisturizing, shiny and glossy-but-not-too-sticky.

    - Run a humidifier in your room at night; the clankity heater in the corner will suck moisture from your skin and leave you parched.

    Good luck, and stay toasty!

    Me & Mr. B...

Lianneandbillyb Wow...wow...wow!  What an honor to be in the presence of such beauty greatness!  I am telling you ladies...it was all that and more.  If you are interested in makeup artistry then you should try...no...I IMPLORE YOU to get to one of the remaining American Beauty Tour Shows.  There are three dates left:

    New Orleans November 4
    Toronto November 25
    Las Vegas  December 2

The New Orleans show is a one of a kind benefit featuring Billy and hairstyling icon Ruth Roche with the proceeds going to Habitat For Humanity.  So if you are anywhere near those three cities - get on it.  Seriously.

Now back to today's show!!  I felt like we needed more time!  Tips and tricks are invaluable in any industry and boy did he give em!!  I learned more there in 3 hours than I ever did anywhere else.  He is humble and most of all, approachable.  Many makeup artists that are at his level have their noses in the air and are kicking people off their heels.  Billy will give you a hand.Pa210212

The almost 3 hours FLEW by and I was left wanting more!  As he worked on this GAWGUS model (see the finished product on the right), he talked shop and dished on tips that were sprinkled with stories and Billy-isms. The man is funny y'all...so funny, down to earth (umm...can you say rare??) and sweet too!  He hugged me like we were old friends and made me feel like a star honey!  I had a blast and I met new friends too as I ran into Erin from Scandalous Beauty who is one of the newest members of the Beauty Blog Network and we talked for a while.

So a huge thank you to Michael DeVellis and Karen Wyss at the Powder Group for inviting me and to Mr. B for being such an effin DOLL!  I will have a new contest for November ladies...I will be giving away a FULL SET of Billy B. paintBrushes retailed at $250 so stay TUNED!

    I Get To Meet BillyB!!!!

Billybfinal_page_2 Oohh LAWD babies I am so FREAKIN EXCITED.  I am attending The Powder Group's American Beauty Tour this Sunday and I will have a front and center seat for all of the happenings!  In case you are unaware of my affection for Mr. B here is an example of my stalkerisms.  He was kind enough to grant me an interview a few months back when he launched his makeup brush line.

Since then, Billy has expanded his beauty tools line to include an eyelash curler and a lipbrush.  In addition to working his B-HIND off as a makeup artist to the stars he somehow manages to tour across the country teaching seminars for the Powder Group, restore houses in his native Aberdeen, Mississippi, work on his new reality series for BRAVO AND write a darn book.

Whew!  Can you say busy??  I am looking forward to a moment with the master and I will be armed with camera and notebook in hand to capture the moment.

Is there a product(s) that you absolutely must have in your bag at all times?
YES…lipliner, eyeliner, something for my cheeks, eyebrow pencil and lipgloss.

What three items in your bag are you the most proud of?
My Becca items that I just got 75% off.

What are the most embarrassing items in your bag? (come on, we know you have more than one.)

When we got to the front door it was INSANELY CRAZY like a wall of people.  But we were rushed right in by Heather Park from MAC.  When we got there...someone that I have been dying to catch up with for ages, Bianca Alexander from MAC was there to give  us the 411 on all the trends for spring.  Bianca and I go waaaaay back.  She used to work at the MAC counter when I worked for Lancome back in 1993!!  So I was excited to see her.  She is now the Director of Makeup Artistry in North America and she had all kinds of tips and tricks for us.

    The Rundown:

    • MAC's false Lashes are being redone by a celebrity lash designer.  They will have a clear band and the lengths will be shorter with an emphasis on the center instead of the cat eyed look.
    • Brows are softer.  Gone are the over tweezed, over penciled brows.  If you have thin brows - grow em in!  The look is clean, soft and full.
    • For the face - emphasis is on great skin and the finishes you will see will be somewhere in between matte and dewy.  Mineralize Skinfinish Natural which was once limited edition will now be a part of the permanent collection.  This powder is PERFECT for creating the glowing skin described by Bianca.
    • Black eyeliner will be a staple.  Bianca said, "Every woman need to know how to use one..." The liner doesn't even have to be pure black you can use a softer black if you think it looks too harsh or if you are fair skinned.
    • Taupe has become a staple shadow color for all over and detail areas like the crease
    • Lips are glossy and NUDE - no bright colors just subtle.

It seems like the emphasis is all about the eyes for spring ladies!  In addition - Bianca kept making many references to Mia Farrow (a la Rosemary's Baby) and Jerry Hall from the 70's.  While we were in the tents we got to see fashionistas and celebs alike rushing in to see the shows.  Later it was off to lunch around the corner -at Jack's we took over...LOL.  We chatted about trends and hung out for a bit.  Then it was back home and off to dinner with a PR rep from Lancome (that is another post entirely...lol)

I should have all of my pics uploaded and have more for your tomorrow.  I met so many great people (and made some pretty amazing contacts too)!
